I had a haircut appointment at the Tacoma Mall Gene Juarez on Tuesday. I decided to check the mall out while I was there. It was the first time I had been to the mall since mid-February. For those of you who aren’t familiar with Tacoma Mall, it has been around since 1965 and, like many malls, its heyday is in its rear view mirror. It was struggling before the pandemic.
I decided to do a quick walk around to see what is going on while I was there. Tacoma has a mask mandate, so everyone was masked up.
Most stores have someone posted at the entrance double checking to be sure people are masked and maintain physical distancing. Overall, the mall was pretty dead, so physical distancing wasn’t an issue. In past years, this would have been a busy time for back to school shopping.
Of note, today was the first day of the Nordstrom Anniversary sale for the Icon level customer. To be eligible for Icon Status, you must purchase an annual minimum of $15,000 in net purchases at Nordstrom locations using a Nordstrom credit card! I don’t qualify.
In the past, Nordstrom would be buzzing on the first day of the sale. While there were people browsing, social distancing wasn’t an issue. Note: I wasn’t very impressed with the sale merchandise, but that isn’t today’s topic.
The Apple Store did have a line. The entrance is monitored for store capacity, temperatures are taken and physical distancing is in effect. Macy’s on the other hand was a free for all. There was one bottle of hand sanitizer at the entrance and that was it.
The rest of the mall was almost eerily quiet. I don’t think shopping is on many people’s ‘to do’ list these days. My big purchase was some iced tea at the Nordy’s café.
My husband is having shoulder surgery today, so I may not have time to blog. If not, I will report back post-surgery.
