Bellevue Square – still going strong
Back on October 16th, I posted about the ‘end of indoor malls’ with a ???.
I decided to continue my research and took a field trip to Bellevue Square. For those of you not from the area, Bellevue Square is our ‘high end’ mall. The eastside, where the mall is located, is the most affluent area in King County and probably in the Puget Sound overall. The median household income in Seattle is $73,000 (which is higher than the national average) and the median income on the eastside is well over $100,000.
The Bellevue Square stores and shoppers clearly reflect the wealth of their community. This is where you find most of our high-end stores, like Tiffany’s, Max Mara and even Tesla! I saw very few empty storefronts, unlike Tacoma Mall.
There have been some peaceful protests in Bellevue and Bellevue Square was the site of looting on May 31st . Bellevue Square was closed for three months due to the pandemic. It reopened at the end of June. And it doesn’t seem to be missing a beat!
And while it wasn’t as busy as a typical Saturday, it was pretty bustling. I saw several shoppers in the stores and the hallways were filling up by the time I left. I saw ONE person without a mask. But everyone was being cautious about social distancing and the stores had hand sanitizers available and were keeping an eye on the number of customers.
I must admit that it felt normal to be there. If it weren’t for masks, hand sanitizers and signs, it might have felt like a regular Saturday.
Will I go back? The answer is probably yes. But the reality is that I don’t need anything or have much of a desire to go to shopping anymore as a pastime. It is too easy to order online and not spend my time that way these days.
But I can definitely say this indoor mall is not on death’s door, at least from my vantage point!
I am looking forward to Election Day being over. It is probably wishful thinking, but I do hope we know the results on Tuesday night. And I sincerely hope that there will not be civil unrest, regardless of the outcome.
We are watching Cobra on PBS. It is about a geomagnetic solar storm that plunges Britain into darkness and the resulting civil unrest. It is hitting a little too close to home right now with the pandemic, protests and our contentious election!
I will see you on Wednesday regardless.
