The Electoral College meets to certify the election today. 270 electoral votes are needed to win and Joe Biden apparently has 306. I am hopeful that this MIGHT finally be what it takes to put this election behind us so most of us can all move on. Call me a cock-eyed optimist, but a girl can hope!
We have close friends in Italy and the concept of the Electoral College isn’t easy to explain. In 2016, Hillary Clinton won the popular vote by almost 3 million votes. They don’t understand why she wasn’t president.
Enter the Electoral College. According to this article In History Central, the founding ‘fathers’ wanted a buffer between the people and the president and…..
‘They were afraid of direct election to the Presidency. They feared a tyrant could manipulate public opinion and come to power.’Marc Shulman
Over the past 30 years, only once has the Republican candidate won both the popular vote and the Electoral College vote. That was in 2004 when George W. Bush defeated John Kerry. But during that same time, three Republicans have been elected President without winning the popular vote.
I found a helpful perspective on the Electoral College in a New York Times article on our current election. It is a great read! There has been a lot of interest in eliminating the Electoral College because we have changed maybe just a little since 1776???
Here’s an excerpt from the NYT article:
‘Dr. Koza, a computer scientist who taught at Stanford University, argues that the Electoral College should be abolished not because it systematically benefits one party over the other, but because it increases the odds that election results will be challenged even when Americans’ overall preference is clear — precisely what is happening now.’
But if one party thinks the current Electoral College structure gives them the advantage in the Presidential election……
President-elect Biden has incredibly difficult challenges ahead of him. He doesn’t need this ongoing election chaos and neither do the American people.
I will see you on Wednesday and hope the Electoral College certification is in our collective rear-view mirror.
