Maui 2020

It is hard/impossible to believe that this time last year I was on Maui with my junior high/high school/college friends!

One of our friends has a condo on Maui, near Wailea, and she invited us for a visit.  Of course, all 7 of us said ‘yes’ immediately.  It was our second visit.  We had all made the trip 4 years earlier.  Since then, we have survived the death of a spouse, cancer, and numerous joint replacements!

We aren’t much for sightseeing when we get together.  We sit by the pool, frequent local happy hours, do a little shopping and do A LOT of talking!  My friend’s husband can attest to that….poor guy!

We always manage a number of trips to the nearby mall, the Shops at Wailea. I love the iced coffee at the Honolulu Coffee Company and no trip is complete without cookies from Honolulu Cookie (my husband’s favorite and only souvenir). One of our favorites in the morning is Anahola granola with yoghurt.

Our hostess arranged a whale watching trip for us through PacWhale Eco Adventures. I was a bit cynical about whale watching because I live near Puget Sound.  But this was a wonderful experience!  We saw numerous gray whales, moms and babies.  The water was calm and it was a thrill. We all had a great time!  And I was able to cap the trip off with one of my favorite treats, Dole Whip (recipe in link).

One of our last treats was dinner at Mama’s Fish House in Paia (pictured above).  Our hostess made our reservations months earlier and it was sublime!

The pandemic was in the news while we were there, but it seemed like a long way off!  I don’t think any of us could have predicted that this would be our last real vacation for over a year and the toll COVID 19 would take on individuals, families and business!

Fortunately, we all seem to find a way to get together and celebrate our 50+ years of friendship. I have no doubt we will gather when it is safe to do so, after all, our 50th high school reunion is coming up!

Aloha for now and I will be back on Wednesday.
