What Vaccine Did You Get?

That question, along with:

  • Did you have any side effects?
  • If so, what were they?
  • When was your last dose?

These have become the questions of the day for many of us. In WA State, 1.2 million people are now fully vaccinated.

My husband found a great article in the Atlantic about ‘vaccine exuberance’.  I love that phrase!  Vaccines are finally giving people something to talk about when you ask how they are.

Some people are even comparing the vaccines as if they are catalytic converters or dog shampoos. It’s almost reflexive to bring up which of the Moderna, Pfizer-BioNTech, or Johnson & Johnson vaccines went into the arm. “Which one did you get?” you might ask a friend. (All three are very good.)

And to top it off, CDC just came out with a report in the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report – a MUST read for public health people 😊– that these mRNA vaccines work in the real world!  They were 90% effective 14 days after the second dose and 80% effective after only one dose.  As a frame of reference, influenza flu vaccine effectiveness rarely tops 50%. And it looks like vaccinated people aren’t getting asymptomatic infections and spreading COVID along the way.

Yes, people still need to wear masks and practice social distancing.  And yes, the variants are a big worry (although so far the vaccines are holding up) and yes, there is still a long queue for people still needing to be vaccinated and yes, we are far from knowing what the pandemic after times will bring.

But I am all about today’s good news.

So, what vaccine did you get?

See you on Friday.
