I just returned from an AMAZING time in Maui with some of my lifelong friends. We were there to celebrate turning 70. We go so far back that we are now repeating our stories đ. Memories of our freshman year in college would fill a book.
We are very lucky to have a friend and her husband who spend much of their winter on the island. They always host us in style. And I have to give a shout out to her husband who puts up with our constant chatter and laughter. The only time he can count on any quiet is when we are eatingđ.
On to our stay â it was raining the day we arrived and I had some trepidation that we might be in for some tropical rain ahead. But it cleared up and we were able to make the most of every day. The temps were in the 80âs during our stay.
Their condo is located within easy walking distance of a shopping mall, which was a daily distraction from our pool time. I needed a straw sun hat and they are a bit hard to find in Seattle. There are a lot of hats to chose from in Hawaii and, after much consultation, I fixed myself up. I tried it on for my husband when I got home and he wasnât impressed âš.
Our days usually start with several cups of coffee and then a little exercise. Once we got that out of the way, it was pool time. Most of us didnât actually go in the pool; we just continued our chatting in the lounge chairs and enjoyed the incredible landscaping and views of the ocean.
We used to go for happy hour during our visits but since COVID the happy hours have largely gone by the wayside. We had dinner at the condo (cooked by our amazing host) and went out for dinner a few times.Â
Our dining spots â all which were fine and dandy:
The highlight/accomplishment for some of us (not me) was a hike all the way to the top of the Waihee Ridge Trail. My meilleur ami and I only made it part way. It was STEEP beyond anything I have seen! Two of my friends even took a tumble on the path but fortunately didnât sustain any injuries. Clearly, I am more of a ‘walking on a trail’ person than a ‘hiking up a steep mountain’ person! But it was absolutely beautiful. I loved the views and meeting the hikers who came from all over. We rewarded our efforts that day with a fabulous salad and pizza for lunch at Flatbread Company in Paia. It was some of the best pizza I have had outside of Italy.
No trip to Hawaii is complete without some sunset watching and ocean gazing. But what really matters is spending time with these accomplished women who, by some miracle, are my lifelong friends!
Many people will walk in and out of your life, but only true friends will leave footprints in your heart.
